Baltimore saxophonist Andrew Frankhouse picked up the instrument at age 10, while growing up in the buzzing metropolis of Cedar Rapids, IA. He was fortunate to get his start in an exceptional public school music program, which gave him the opportunity to gain valuable experience playing in wind ensembles, big bands, pit orchestras, and stage bands. While living in Asheville, North Carolina he worked extensively with local and regional acts in jazz, jam band, funk, rock, and R&B contexts, playing all over the Southeast.
Andrew then spent eight transformative years in Boston, studying with legendary jazz pedagogues George Garzone and Charlie Banacos, as well as Boston Symphony saxophonist Kenneth Radnofsky and music theorist Dr. Peter J. Evans. There he began to develop his personal sound and approach to the instrument, and a musical conception built around relationships of color, space, time, form, tradition, and the distortion and manipulation thereof. In addition to jazz, Andrew worked as a freelancer and doubler in a variety of musical settings including pit orchestras, wedding and function bands, classical wind ensembles, and club dates with singer-songwriter, blues, R&B, hip-hop, funk, and neo-soul acts. Andrew’s first album as a leader, Gray/Slate/Yellow, was released in December of 2011. The ensemble includes outstanding Boston bassist Sean Farias and New York-based drummer Ignacio Rivas Bixio, and includes seven of Frankhouse’s original compositions. From the liner notes: The music on this record is based on two unifying principles: 1) An improvising ensemble doesn’t need complex tunes, forms, or concepts to find its voice. 2) Freely improvised music doesn’t need to lack direction, purpose, or accessibility.
In 2010, Andrew was hired to create a new 5-12th grade music program for the Innovation Academy Charter School in Tyngsboro, MA. His work there has included creating new coursework in musicology, electronic music, aesthetics, and African American music, conducting high school musical productions, and laying the groundwork for school-wide vocal and instrumental performance programs. His primary curricular focus was around creating curriculum for teaching musical analysis to non-musicians at the secondary level, using concepts rooted Systems Thinking/Systems Dynamics. He has given presentations on this curriculum to graduate students at the Longy School of Music and at the Creative Learning Exchange Conference at Babson College. In addition Andrew has consistently maintained a private studio, teaching saxophone, clarinet, flute, and jazz improvisation. He is also currently offering Skype lessons in jazz improvisation, using an innovative curriculum of his own design.
Andrew holds a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Studies magna cum laude from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He received his Master of Music degree with distinction in Modern American Music from the Longy School of Music.
