Teaching

I currently offer lessons in saxophone, clarinet, flute, and improvisation (on any instrument) in metro Washington, DC at my own studio or through Middle C Music (4530 Wisconsin Ave NW, at the Tenleytown/AU metro stop).

I work with students at all levels, from middle-school beginners to advanced high-school students auditioning for university music programs, and beyond. My teaching focuses on proper sound production, excellent technique, and helping each student find their individual musical voice. I shape instruction to fit the needs, ability, and goals of individual students. Competition or audition material, improvisation in various styles (jazz, rock, blues, etc.), theory, composition, ear training and more are woven into weekly curriculum for each student, depending on their personal needs and interests.

I also offer jazz improvisation lessons via Skype, for serious students wishing to take their jazz playing to the next level. Each Skype lesson comes with an individual lesson plan in PDF format, with exercises covering long tones, scales, and improvisation concepts (ii-V vocabulary, voice leading, chromatic and diatonic approaches, extensions, melodic structures, rhythmic concepts, and more!).

Please use the contact form at the bottom of the page or on the “Contact” page above to get in touch regarding in-person or Skype lessons!

E-Books

My Jazz Vocabulary Catalog is a collection of  my favorite lines from transcriptions, neatly organized and transposed to 12 keys. I have kept a catalog for myself for quite a while, but decided to start transposing it and make it available here as well. Practicing whole solos is great, but much of the value of transcription comes from absorbing small pieces of vocabulary from the great players – this catalog can be a tool in that pursuit.

Transcriptions

Disclaimer: I make no claim that these transcriptions are complete, perfect, or publication-ready – there are likely mistakes in ALL of them! It is not my objective to record every 13-tuplet, articulation, and inflection in excruciating detail – that’s what recordings are for! These have all been part of my learning process and growth as a musician, and I feel it worthwhile to share them with the community.
